Update on Los Lobos y El Sindicatos

I wanted to give an update about the union organisers that visited my job site a week ago.

I did not look forward to seeing them on Tuesday morning, and I’m glad they didn’t show up because it was very cold and there was a leftover pile of snow on the sidewalk where they liked to congregate and ambush the buses as we paused for the stop sign. We were off for Martin Luther King Day and it was very cold also.

I was talking with the dispatcher and even she mentioned that they were aggressive. Right away I knew how the scenario would play out if we unionised. The first thing they would do is twist the arm of the big boss to give us all a hefty raise. He is not the type of person who would give in to such an unreasonable demand, so he would say no. We already get small raises during the course of the year. Then the union would authorise a strike. Some of the matrons and office personnel would be tapped to be drivers while the rest of us would be home getting strike pay or walking the picket line. It would keep going downhill until the boss and los lobos arrive at a happy medium. But the work environment would be vastly different. No more freebies, no new equipment, no more holiday bonus, no more breakfasts at the diner on the company dime. We would be divided into two groups: pro union and anti union.

It makes me think of the movie “Norma Rae” with Sally Field portraying the titular character who works at a textile mill where working conditions are not good. She meets a union organiser who convinces her fellow employees to vote union, but management did not like it; and she was eventually arrested.

The company ordered new anti union signs that will be placed at the houses in the coming weeks. The signs all have a missing semicolon so the line is a run on sentence with confusing semantics. I know two people who will not like seeing that sign. A certain person I know works at UPS and she’s a member of their union.

As it stands now, I doubt they will return, but I would not be surprised if they show up again once the weather warms up. But the threat of cameras on the buses continues to be a sore point.
